Design History: Key Figures in the World of Lighting

The history of lighting is as fascinating as design itself. Every era has brought new ideas, materials and technologies, but the influence of a few creative individuals has endured. Today, when we talk about elegance, functionality and timelessness in lighting design, it is impossible to ignore names like Arne Jacobsen, Achille Castiglioni and Gino Sarfatti – masters whose work has influenced the entire world of lighting.

Arne Jacobsen – Nordic minimalism and functionality

Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) was a pioneer of modernism, whose work combines simplicity of form with ease of use. His AJ lamp series remains one of the most recognizable symbols of Nordic design to this day. Designed in 1957, the table and wall lamps became famous for their clear silhouette and perfect light distribution. Jacobsen believed that good design should be “sensible and quiet”, fitting harmoniously into a space without dominating it. Many pendant lamps and table lamps today still follow this principle – less is more.

Achille Castiglioni – playfulness and technical elegance

Italian design legend Achille Castiglioni (1918–2002) brought playfulness and a daring sense of experimentation to lighting design. His Arco lamp, created in 1962, is an iconic piece that combines a marble base and a large, arched metal rod with an elegant dome hanging from it. This lamp changed the way light could move in a space – without the luminaire being on the ceiling or wall. Castiglioni pioneered the idea that lighting could be both functional and sculptural, something we see in today’s floor lamps and designer chandeliers.

Gino Sarfatti – technology and the aesthetics of light

Another Italian genius, Gino Sarfatti (1912–1985), was a true lighting engineer. He founded the company Arteluce, which launched more than 600 luminaires and paved the way for modern lighting design. Sarfatti experimented with different light sources and materials, trying to achieve maximum effect with minimal resources. His work also led to the birth of modern modular LED luminaires that can be adapted to suit the space and function.

A legacy that lives on

Jacobsen, Castiglioni and Sarfatti proved that light is much more than a technical solution – it is part of architecture, emotion and lifestyle. Their ideas live on in the creations of today's manufacturers: for example, Maytoni, Nordlux and Zuma Line combine Nordic simplicity, Italian elegance and technological smarts in their collections.
